Day 31 & 32: Gorges and Dinosaurs

We arrived a day early at the campsite and took a walk-in site, next to our site for the following day.  But we made it.

We drove around Flaming Gorge.  This is a man-made lake with a dam at the South.  The lake extends almost 100 miles.  The walls of the canyon are steeper than Grand Canyon.  I was more nervous here than at the Grand Canyon.  Maybe it was all the cracks that extended into the paths.  Or it was the signs that said "Guard your children".

But I crossed off another animal: big horn sheep.

We also drove on a scenic drive through the rocks.  I highly recommend taking all the little off-shoots when driving through the parks.  We saw many rock formations that you cannot see from the main road.

It was a good day.

Our goal the next day was to make it to Grand Junction, but on the way we have a couple stops: the dam visitor center and Dinosaur National Monument.  The dam tour was free, but make sure you bring a quarter.  The top has a crane to service the gates.  We went down an elevator to the bottom to see the generators.  Outside they had the jets opened to simulate the spring run-off to help certain fish spawn.  They only open the jets for 2-3 weeks a year, so we got lucky.  I didn't plan that part.

Did you bring a quarter?  We didn't, but the tour guide happen to have one.  She bought a handful of fish food and tossed it in.  Trout the length of your arm came out of nowhere and ate it up.  Definitely bring a quarter.  After we got back to the top, I repaid her the quarter and gave her an extra for the next family of free-loaders so they can see the trout.

Next: Dinosaurs!  Ryan got a set of dinosaurs for Christmas.  He doesn't talk much, but he has a few words.  He named his dinosaurs: Joe, Neigh, Cock-a-doodle-doo, Roof, Meow.  We walked to the entrance to the visitor center and there was Neigh (Stegosaurus)!

The scientist that found this set of bones wrote in his journal that he would love if a wall of the bones could be saved as an exhibit.  That is what we saw.
