I'm in the desert, in May. I expected to die of heat stroke before frostbite was a concern. But this was not the reality for us.
There are shuttle buses that run the length of the rim road. The western road past the Village is shuttle bus only. We took the shuttle bus thinking that if things clear up we could hop off, see the canyon, and hop on the next bus. As we are riding down the road, we would stop at a point, some people would get off, a few people would be able to get back on, and the bus would leave. Not everyone at the stop would make it on! Another adjustment to the master plan. We took the bus to the end of the line, Hermit's Rest, to get off. We didn't want to be stuck waiting half an hour for the 2nd bus to make it to the point. At Hermit's Rest we go off and went into the shelter for a snack.
It started to clear up, so I took a few for a short wander.
The weather cleared up enough for us to see the canyon. And we saw elk!
